Just Love?
On Tuesday, October 4th, 2011, Marriage Equality launched our "Just Love?' campaign to highlight the discrimination that same-sex couples in Ireland continue to experience as a result of the lack of marriage equality.
Although civil partnership, introduced at the beginning of 2011, offers legal recognition to same sex couples relationships as well as many of the rights and obligations that are available to married couples, it is not marriage and it therefore not equality.
What's Involved?
Our "Just Love?" campaign features:
- Our short film, called "Rory's Story", which highlights the real consequences of denying same sex couples equality - particularly the harm it does to children of same sex families by denying them and their parents the rights and protections that are given to married families.
- "Missing Pieces" - our marriage audit report, detailing 169 legislative differences between Civil Partnership and marriage.
- Our "Just Love?" poster campaign, which shows images of real couples and families affected by the marriage ban in Ireland.
Why "Just Love"?
In essence, the argument for marriage equality boils down to 2 things - love, and justice. The definition of "just" is:
- guided by truth, reason, justice and fairness
- done or made according to principle; equitable; proper
- based on right; rightful; lawful
- in keeping with truth or fact; true; correct
- given or awarded rightly; deserved
- in accordance with standards or requirements; proper or right
- actual, real or genuine
Our fight for equality is about doing the right thing - for couples, children and families all over Ireland. Anything other than equality is not just.
After all... it's just love.
