Marriage Equality’s February Advocate of the Month

2 Feb 2011

UCC LGBT Society is a long-time supporter of Marriage Equality, and so we are delighted to name them February's Advocate of the Month!

Over the past 20 years, UCC LGBT Society has grown into the largest university-based LGBT Society in Ireland, with a strong, dedicated committee and active members. They are dedicated to campaigning for LGBT equality issues, have actively worked to raise awareness of the need for equal marriage rights for same-sex couples all over Ireland and held fundraisers for Marriage Equality.

Most recently, from January 10 - 14, UCC LGBT Society held its hugely successful Rainbow Week, which included guest speakers, quizzes, a Rainbow Mock Wedding and a Just Married Party to raise funds for Marriage Equality, and to raise awareness of marriage equality as an important issue.

Laura Harmon, Campaigns Officer for UCC LGBT Society, said the Rainbow Mock Wedding was a campaign "...to highlight our LGBT Society's belief that the Civil Partnership Act does not go far enough for same-sex couples, and that all couples - regardless of gender or sexual orientation - should have access to full civil marriage in Ireland."

We at Marriage Equality are extremely grateful to UCC LGBT Society, its committee and all its members for all their hard work and dedication to campaigning for equal marriage rights over the years. We're looking forward to continuing to work with all of you in the future!

UCC Lgbt Committee

"We are grateful for and admire the work of organisations such as Marriage Equality and we ourselves try to do as much as we can to highlight our dissatisfaction with the Civil Partnership Act and its inadequacies. We believe that the Civil Partnership Act creates a second class system for same-sex couples and falls far short of securing equality. We believe that we deserve to be treated much better by our Government and will not be happy until full equality is secured for LGBT persons in Ireland. We hope to continue to highlight our UCC LGBT Society's stance on this issue and hope that the campaigning element we have nurtured this year continues into the future."
