The Attorney General of Canada has made a very clear public statement in Toronto today (January 14th) that:

(a) The Government is of the opinion that these marriages (same-sex marriages of non-Canadians) are valid;
(b) The Civil Marriage Act will be amended to make this clear;
(c) the commitment to do so is in addition to the commitment to amend the divorce law to permit such couples to divorce here, and
(d) acknowledged the needless distress this uncertainty has caused to the affected couples.

He stressed repeatedly that his Government has no intention of re-opening this debate.
