With less than one week to go until the closing deadline for submissions to the Constitutional Convention (March 19th), Marriage Equality have urged people to submit their suggestions, share their personal stories, and make their voices heard about the issue.  The Constitutional Convention is due to consider “the provision of same-sex marriage” at its next meeting on April 13th and 14th.

“We’re delighted to see so many positive submissions on the issue of providing for equal marriage rights for lesbian and gay couples,” said Marriage Equality Director Moninne Griffith.  “In the 5 short years we’ve been working, it has been so encouraging to see support for marriage equality grow year on year.  The fact that submissions in favour of marriage equality outnumber those against by 10 to 1 shows that people want Ireland to do the right thing, and to be a leader on this issue.  And we CAN be a leader when it comes to equality for all families, by enshrining essential Irish values of justice, equality, fairness, and respect for all citizens in the Constitution.”

“Now is the time for marriage equality,” added Ms Griffith.  “This Convention is the opportunity for us as a country to take the next step as a modern, democratic country that has respect for diversity and that believes in equality for all families.  We look forward to working with the members of the Constitutional Convention to protect same sex couples and families, and to ensure that they are treated equally under the law by enshrining marriage equality in the Irish Constitution.”
