John Gormley speaks about delayed Civil Partnership legislation at the launch of Dublin Pride Festival

27 May 2008

Last Night Dublin Pride Limited launched the 2008 Festival "25 Years of Dublin Pride - Always the Bridesmaid never the Bride" in the Mansion House.

The festival will take place from the 13th of June until the 22nd of June all over Dublin. For details of the events planned and the parade, which takes place on Mid-summer's day, the 21st of June, see their website www.dublinpride.ie

Speaking at the launch Minister Gormley acknowledged that civil partnership is not equality and that the forthcoming civil partnership legislation will not satisfy everyone. He also acknowledged that there had been a delay with the publishing of the Heads of the Bill on Civil Partnership, but promised to keep pushing for it. Long time activist Tonie Walsh, who will be Grand Marshall at this year's parade, spoke of how far we have come since he marched in the first Dublin Pride March in 1983 and said that marriage equality was one of the last markers for equality for LGBTQ people in Ireland.

We would ask anyone who wishes to march with us in this year's parade to contact us on (01) 6599459.
