Ireland's top gay choirs to hold fundraising concert for civil marriage rights campaign organisation

Tickets are on sale now for "True Colours" - a fundraising concert hosted by Cork Action for Equality, and featuring Glória and Choral ConFusion - Dublin and Cork-based lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) choirs. The concert will be held tomorrow (June 9th) at 8pm at Saint Fin Barre's Cathedral in Cork, and is a fundraiser for Marriage Equality, which has been working since 2008 to achieve civil marriage rights for same-sex couples in Ireland.

Speaking about their decision to organise "True Colours" for Marriage Equality, Cork Action for Equality spokesperson Laura Harmon said: ''We're delighted to have these two brilliant choirs team up in Cork for this fantastic event. The campaign for equal access to civil marriage in Ireland hasn't been won yet, despite the recent Red C poll which found that 73% of the public think same-sex marriages should be allowed in our Constitution. We can't afford to become complacent and we need to keep supporting campaigning efforts in this area if we are to achieve equality for same-sex families.''

The upcoming Constitutional Convention includes a remit to look at "the provision of same-sex marriage", among other issues. Marriage Equality is the only national organisation solely dedicated to campaigning for civil marriage for same-sex couples in Ireland. Historically they have been funded by The Atlantic Philanthropies; however, the funder is winding down its operations and the LGBT sector - including Marriage Equality - will be among the first to see their funding cut.

"We're at such an important moment in history for the marriage equality campaign," said Marriage Equality Director Moninne Griffith. "We're incredibly grateful to The Atlantic Philanthropies for their support over the years, but unfortunately now that support is coming to an end. The Constitutional Convention is a key opportunity for us to get our campaign across the line. That's why it's crucial we raise enough to continue getting our messages across using social media campaigns, short films, online and outdoor advertising, ongoing research, and awareness raising materials. We're delighted that groups like Cork Action for Equality, Glória and Choral ConFusion have offered their talents and support to our campaign by hosting 'True Colours' as a fundraiser for us."

Speaking about his choir's decision to take part in 'True Colours', Richard Deane, Deputy Chairperson of Glória, explained: "We are really delighted to be able to support the campaign for civil marriage equality. It is great to be able to join forces with our Cork counterparts Choral ConFusion. We are looking forward to singing for people in Cork as we have many fans and followers in the county. We are particularly delighted that the concert is taking place in such a fantastic venue. It promises to be a great evening."
