Irish language group launch to secure Yes in Marriage Referendum.

6th May 2015: TÁ Comhionannas, the Irish language group supporting Yes Equality, today launched its campaign for a YES vote in the upcoming Marriage Equality Referendum.

Traolach Ó Buachalla, TÁ Comhionannas spokesperson, said, “Marriage equality is an issue we know that nearly all Irish people are talking about. TÁ Comhionannas is launching to invite all Irish speakers to engage in this national conversation.

“The referendum on May 22 is about one thing only, extending civil marriage equality – giving equal rights to equal citizens. As the Referendum Commission has confirmed, following the poll on May 22nd, ‘The Constitutional status of marriage will remain unchanged’.

At the launch Pat Carey, said “The Irish language in the way that it describes family, is inclusive of the strong tradition of family in Ireland. Words like teaghlach which refer to family, include a household; words like muintir talk about the people who make up your family. The strength of ties and the focus on substance, rather than form implied in the Irish language, underscores what this referendum is about – whether we can extend constitutional definition of family to include lesbian and gay couples.

“We are asking people to vote Yes because marriage matters in Ireland. It is the bedrock of community and family and we believe this should be extended to lesbian and gay people who are our sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, they are our community members.”

Pobal Gaeilge ar son Comhionannais ag lorg an Vóta TÁ

6ú Bealtaine 2015: Sheol ‘Tá Comhionannas’ a bhfeachtas chun vóta TÁ a bhaint amach sa reifreann ar chomhionannas pósta.

Dúirt Traolach Ó Buachalla, cathaoirleach Tá Comhionannas: ‘Tá an t-ábhar seo i mbeál an phobail le déanaí, ábhar tábhachtacht is ea é. Teastaíonn uainn go pléfear i measc phobal na Gaeilge é.’

‘Is é an comhionannas pósta sibhialta atá i gceist sa reifreann seo. Ní athrú ar an bpósadh atá ann, ach cearta pósta a leathnú do shaoránaigh uile na tíre seo, mar atá deimhnithe ag an gCoimisiún Reifrinn, a deir “Ní bheidh aon athrú ar stádas an phósta sa Bhunreacht.”

Dúirt Pat Carey, ‘Cuimsíonn an focal ‘teaghlach’ níos mó ná clann amháin, sa Ghaeilge agus sa Bhunreacht. Úsáideann muid na focail clann, teaghlach agus muintir ar shlí iomlán éagsúla ón mBéarla – aithníonn muidne baill uile an teaghlaigh.’

‘Is éard atá i gceist sa reifreann seo ná costaint an bhunreachta a thabhairt do theaghlaigh uile na tíre seo – lánúineacha leispiacha agus aeracha ina measc.

‘Is bunús daingean é an pósadh ar a mbíonn rath ag an tsochaí. Ar an 22 Bealtaine, iarrtar ar phobal na hÉireann saoirse chun pósta a roinnt le gach mac, gach iníon, gach deartháir, gach deirfiúr in Éirinn trí vótáil Tá sa Reifreann ar Chomhionannas Pósta.’

Tabhair dom lámh, seas linn agus vótáil Tá.
