Marriage Equality's Fundraising Spotlight is on Shawna Scott - an Irish wedding photographer (originally from America) and a supporter of Marriage Equality.
Shawna is the creator of The Big Gay Wedding Project, where she will photograph couples at their Civil Partnership celebrations in 2011. Photos she has taken will feature on her blog, along with video updates, to document the first year of Civil Partnerships taking place in Ireland.
At the end of 2011 and the beginning of 2012, Shawna will be holding an exhibition of her photos and we are delighted to announce that she has decided to donate the profits to Marriage Equality.
Here's why Shawna is fundraising for Marriage Equality:
"This project is important to me because I think it's the biggest civil rights campaign of my generation. It astounds me that in 2010 in both Ireland and America, something like equal marriage (which should be a no-brainer) is still being debated. It feels as if it is a no-brainer to the vast majority of straight people my age. However, because it doesn't affect their own personal rights, they've become complacent, and I must admit, I was part of that demographic too up until last month. Maybe because I thought that it should be a no-brainer to everyone, that proper laws would pass soon enough without my help. And then they didn't...neither here nor in my home state of Washington. So this is me pitching in, and I really hope that it will inspire more straight people to do the same."
